The only way to know for sure would be to try it out. Check in your computer if you have 1 or 2 antennas. I know that the RT3290 is 1x1 but I'm not sure if your computer may have just 1 antenna inside or 2. 

 

I did some research on the AR5B91 you mentioned. It is 1x2:2 which means it has 1 Up, 2 Down and 2 spatial streams. So that is a better card. The pictures I saw of it vary though. Is it a full-sized wireless card or half-sized card? Will it fit in your wireless card bay? 

 

I'm also checking on the technical compatibility now too. I'll get back with you on that as soon as I can. There would be no harm in plugging it in, if it fits and your notebook has two antennas. You'd have to get the driver and try it out.

I also checked on the specific error message you provided. Someone mentioned on this thread to reinstall and update patches. Have a look at the last post on that link.
